At the heart of the Mayfair food and art scene, The Square sits only a few minutes walk from Green Park tube station on Bruton Street. With a menu full of exquisite surprises, the culinary genius that is Chef Clément brings to your table a contemporary approach to haute cuisine, making the recent revamp of The Square one of our favourite things for 2018.
The already established venue has a new concept and is the perfect blend of modern elegance. With a new tasting menu that takes the idea of a 7-course small plate extravaganza to new heights, The Square delivers a dining experience that left us absolutely speechless. If you’re wondering where to go for your next date night or where to send the boss or yourself on the next client outing, The Square is at the very top of our recommendation list. It is the ultimate in Mayfair sophistication.
Executive Chef Clément Leroy, formerly of Guy Savoy’s 3-Michelin-starred restaurant in Paris, sees his evolutionary approach to modern cuisine transported from Chantilly, France, to his current Mayfair location. Originally from Romans-sur-Isere situated in the South of France, he serves artistic dishes with inestimable flair, while his cooking style pulls on inspiration from his travels around the world. In France, Chef Leroy has a reputation for discovering, sourcing and championing small artisanal suppliers and prior to his move to London, Clément held the position of executive chef at Auberge du Jeu de Paume in Chantilly.
With a focus on everything from superior customer service to the extensive wine list harbouring over 2500 bins to choose from, The Square is led by a friendly and knowledgeable team and with Head Sommelier Andrea Zarbetto on-hand to match wines according to all tastes and budgets, you can be as lavish or as reserved as you wish. It was Clément Leroy’s debut tasting menu that we had chosen to experience on our visit and with the warmest of welcomes into the exquisite dining room from the charming Maitre’ D, we waltzed past the private dining room hosting 18 guests and were sat down with a glass of champagne and menu’s laid out.
The buzz around the Mayfair scene about the reopening of The Square left me thinking, would it be as good as it was before the recent and change of owner/team. Little did I know that once I had devoured our canapes with my glass of fizz, I would be wishing I had a table at The Square every night of the week…
With our orders confirmed and dietary requirements worked around, we opted for the menu with paired wines to each course. Not for the faint-hearted, The Square is not a place where the team likes to see anyone leave hungry and or thirsty so prepare for a two-hour commitment to the menu and to fully embrace everything that comes with it.
With the restaurant full of eager diners, The Square is perfectly positioned to be either the place for special occasion, a business event or just a pit stop from shopping on Bond Street. The clientele was as glamorous as the interior and it was obvious to see how adored this Mayfair culinary institution is amongst both the locals and those who travel from afar.
We began with Cured Cornish Mackerel, with Leek, Pink Radish and Chive paired with a wine selected specifically to complement each element of the mesmerising dish.
Moving on to the scallops and it was an artichoke alternative for me due to an allergy to shellfish. Again, a paired wine to complement both the scallops and the artichoke. All done so by the beautifully dressed and well-presented restaurant team who certainly make the experience of being at The Square one you will never forget.
Moving through the tasting menu, we concluded with a large piece of chocolate made even more exciting by the small silver pickaxe given to us to mine our large piece into smaller pieces. With a coffee liqueur to finish off the evening, we took 5 minutes to sit in the more casual area of the restaurant which could easily be utilised for a lunch date or a cocktail after work.
We left with full stomachs and even bigger hearts filled with admiration for the team and what they have accomplished at this sensational restaurant. Will we be returning? Without a shadow of a doubt. Would we recommend it? Absolutely!
