Our Concierge Reviews: A Relaxing Countryside Escape at Sopwell House 🌿✨

We recently had the pleasure of spending a night at Sopwell House, and it was exactly the kind of countryside escape we all needed.

Nestled within 12 acres of beautiful Hertfordshire countryside just outside St Albans, Sopwell House feels worlds away from the pace of the city, yet it’s incredibly easy to reach from London. From the moment you arrive, there’s a real sense of calm and warm hospitality that immediately sets the tone for your stay.

Whether you’re visiting for a relaxing overnight stay, a spa day, or planning a conference, meeting or celebration, Sopwell House strikes that rare balance between an elegant country retreat and a highly versatile event venue.

A Day in the Spa 🧖‍♀️

After checking in, we spent the afternoon enjoying the spa facilities, which immediately set the tone for the whole stay. Sopwell House actually has two spa experiences. There is the main spa and Cottonmill, a more exclusive space designed for guests looking for something extra private and indulgent. For this visit, we spent our time in the main spa.

The space is calm, beautifully designed and perfect for switching off completely. We spent time moving between the pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna, enjoying the relaxed pace and tranquil atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where hours pass without you noticing.

The service throughout the spa was exceptional. The team were attentive, friendly and incredibly helpful, making sure every guest felt completely looked after. It’s clear that genuine hospitality sits at the heart of the Sopwell House experience.

Dinner at The Brasserie 🍽️

That evening we headed to The Brasserie at Sopwell House for dinner, and it was a lovely way to end a relaxing day.

To start, I ordered the scallops, beautifully presented and perfectly cooked. For the main course, the salmon was light, fresh and full of flavour. Dessert was a vegan cheesecake which was absolutely delicious, proving that Sopwell House takes dietary requirements seriously without compromising on flavour.

It’s always refreshing to see restaurants offer thoughtful options for different dietary needs, and the team here were incredibly accommodating and knowledgeable about the menu.

After dinner, we moved through to the hotel’s stunning bar area for a drink. With soft lighting, elegant interiors and a relaxed buzz, it’s the perfect place to unwind with a cocktail before heading to bed.

Bed and Breakfast ☀️

Our room overlooked the gardens, and waking up to the sunshine across the grounds was a real highlight.

The room itself was spacious, comfortable and beautifully maintained. With large windows overlooking the greenery, it felt peaceful and private, a true countryside retreat.

Breakfast the next morning was nothing short of spectacular. The buffet had everything you could possibly want, from fresh pastries and fruit to hot breakfast favourites. Once again there were plenty of options for gluten free, dairy free and other dietary requirements.

Safe to say, we may have gone back for seconds (and thirds).

Events, Meetings and Private Hire 🎉

Before leaving, we were given a tour of the event and meeting spaces, and this is where Sopwell House really shines for assistants and corporate planners.

There’s an impressive variety of rooms available for hire, ranging from smaller meeting spaces ideal for boardroom discussions to much larger rooms perfect for conferences, private dinners or celebrations. Each space feels thoughtfully designed, flexible and well equipped, making it easy to tailor events of different sizes.

With 12 acres of grounds, the venue also works beautifully for team away days, outdoor activities or company retreats, something many London based teams are increasingly looking for.

What stood out most was the level of support offered. From the booking process through to the day of your event, a dedicated coordinator oversees every detail to ensure everything runs seamlessly.

Final Thoughts

Sopwell House delivers exactly what a countryside hotel should. Beautiful surroundings, exceptional service, fantastic food and spaces that work equally well for relaxation or events.

Whether you’re planning a spa escape, a corporate away day, a private celebration or a large conference, this Hertfordshire gem offers the perfect setting just outside London.

We left feeling completely refreshed and already planning our return.
